6/29/2023 0 Comments Liane moriarty series![]() ![]() ![]() It just made her feel like a mutant or something. She just loved it! The other one said it was terrible. One of them said it was fantastic being a triplet. ![]() In most novels this would sound like sure-fire screen adaptation material but there’s a catch. What starts out as a joyful and noisy celebration turns suddenly into a hideous fight, disturbing the peace of everyone in the busy Sydney seafood restaurant and ending with one of the blondes throwing a fondue fork at the redhead (who is pregnant), then fainting flat out on the hard floor. The opening pages are told through the voices of various onlookers, mostly fellow diners and staff at the restaurant where blonde-haired Lyn and Cat, and redhead Gemma are out celebrating their 34th birthdays. ![]() Ms Moriarty’s light touch is again an absolute winner, so we can empathise and sympathise with each of the three leading characters in turn. Three Wishes was written as part of Moriarty’s master’s degree at Macquarie University in Sydney and was her first novel. And now I’ve loved Moriarty’s Three Wishes, originally published by Pan in 2004 and republished by Penguin in 2016. Alas, I’ve not managed to see the adaptation, but I loved the book on which it was based. Most people by now will have heard of Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies, famously adapted into a television series starring Nicole Kidman. ![]() 6/29/2023 0 Comments The tell tale story![]() ![]() ![]() The story is a proof of human being’s inherently evil nature. ![]() The setting and diction used in the story make it a classic Poe story. The story is one of the classics of Poe’s short stories and of its genre. Poe only focuses on the events and situations which lead to the killing rather than focusing on individuals. We do not know, as readers, whether the narrator is a male or a female. Furthermore, Poe has not given us detail about the narrator’s relationship with the old man. The untrustworthy narrator does not have a solid reason to murder the old man (apart from his hatred for the old man’s eye). Eventually, he cannot bear the secret anymore and confesses his crime to the policemen. His guilty conscience constantly pricks him and reminds him of his brutal act. He also receives the policemen with utmost comfort but, slowly and gradually, his anxiety increases. He attends to every minute detail in the process of murder carefully kills him, disjoints every part of his body, and then buries the body parts underground in the room. The old man’s “vulture-eye” makes the narrator angry and he decides to kill him. ![]() 6/29/2023 0 Comments Books similar to bared to you![]() ![]() "An erotic romance that should not be missed. But – it wasn’t a warm novel, rather a relating of events and people. ![]() ![]() This novel employs some well rendered imagery and was well researched. “Winter, at bay for weeks, has taken sundown as its cue” We didn’t learn ‘ how‘ Lillian felt – and ‘ why‘ she championed the causes she did. But all of these admirable traits were related with no real empathy. She was a feminist and a career woman who lived in a time when women just wanted to stop working and get married and raise a family. I admired Lillian, who wouldn’t? She was vivacious, witty and very intelligent. We learned their names but nothing about their personalities. We learned that Lillian just about always had a cat. Other than the fact that Lillian and her husband Max were truly in love, we didn’t ‘ know‘ anything about him. Other than her name and what she did for a living, Helen was an enigma. But… we didn’t get to ‘know’ any of them. Friends, coworkers, lovers – people she adored and people she barely tolerated. We learned that she had many people in her life. My problem with that was that the story read almost like a report. Now an octogenarian, Lillian laments her lost youth, and reflects upon the loneliness incumbent on the aged – when many friends, acquaintances, and contemporaries are no longer living. “The Strand” – one of Lillian’s favorite book stores ![]() ![]() From King Edward VIII's abdication of the throne in order to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson and King George VI's subsequent crowning, through World War II, and all the way to Elizabeth's courtship and marriage to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Crawfie's memoir offers an intimate and revelatory perspective of Elizabeth and Margaret's childhood during one of the most momentous eras in British history. A quietly creepy story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The writing is beautifully descriptive and quickly enthralled me and transported me to the places and eras in each chapter. This was a tame thriller, I didn't find it as creepy as I had hoped for. " Pacing was a little slow, and I found the story within a story to be distracting. It's an easy, short read, with a plot line that reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode. " - Emily, ![]() " WOW this book was so creepy, I'm never buying an old piece of art EVER!!! i think was a great pick for a halloween challenge. " This is another genuinely creepy ghost story novella from Susan Hill, in short if you like the women in black, (I don't know about the film or stage versions, just the book), then you will like this. It's short and doesn't take long to read, but it's very easy to put down. Clarissa reminded me of Jennet, the angry and crazed ghost from The Woman in Black. Hill does a good job of creating atmosphere and tension, but I found the story predictable. " After reading and enjoying The Woman in Black, I tried this one.
